Effect of temperature on the growth of individual cucumber fruits
In order to study the effect of temperature on the growth of individual fruits in cucumber (cucumis sativus L. cv. Corona), fruits were grown at 17. 5. 20,25 and 30°C continuously or the fruit temperature was changed from 17. 5 to 27.5°C or vice versa. Fruit development appeared to be closely related to the temperature sum. When the growth of a fruit was not constrained by assimilate supply, a decrease in growing period with increasing temperature was more than compensated for by a strong increase in growth rate, resulting in an increase in final fruit weight. However, when the growth of a fruit was constrained by assimilate supply, the increase in growth rate with increasing temperature was small and did not compensate for the decrease in growing period, resulting in a decrease in final fruit weight. Determinations of cell number and size showed that the effect of temperature on fruit growth was due to effects on cell expansion rather than on cell division. When growth was not constrained by assimilate supply. However, when assimilate supply did constrain fruit growth the number of cells per fruit decreased with increasing temperature, while the effect on cell size was negligible. In all stages of fruit development, the growth rate of a cucumber fruit responded within one day to a change in temperature. It was not irreversibly impaired by a low temperature (17. 5°C) during the early development of a fruit. A high temperature treatment (27. 5°C), however, had a great effect on the growth rate of a fruit after the temperature treatment had terminated. At all stages of fruit development (even before anthesis) a period of four days at 27. 5°C resulted in a pronounced stimulation of the growth rate afterwards at 17. 5°C.

The sexual and host‐related behaviours of the fruit fly Anastrepha obliqua Macquart (Diptera: Tephritidae) are mediated by volatile compounds. However, whether the physiological state of this species affects its antennal and behavioural responses to semiochemicals is unknown. The effects of age, mating status, diet and the topical application of methoprene, a Juvenile hormone analogue (JHA), on the antennal sensitivity of this tephritid fruit fly species to selected male [(Z)‐3‐nonenol] and host fruit volatiles (ethyl benzoate, ethyl hexanoate, ethyl butyrate and trans‐β‐ocimene) are investigated using electroantennography (EAG). Overall, (Z)‐3‐nonenol and ethyl benzoate elicit the highest EAG responses in both sexes. Flies of both sexes aged 1, 5 and 10 days old show higher EAG responses to the tested compounds compared with flies aged 20 days old. Virgin females and males show higher EAG responses to volatile compounds than mated flies. Females and males fed with sugar plus protein show higher antennal responses to volatiles compared with flies fed sugar or protein alone. Flies of both sexes treated with methoprene show higher antennal responses than flies treated with acetone (control). These results suggest that the peripheral olfactory system in A. obliqua is modulated by the physiological state of the flies.

Reproductive data were collected on individually-held adult oriental fruit flies, Dacus dorsalis, melon flies, Dacus cucurbitae, and Mediterranean fruit flies, Ceratitis capitata including age-by-parity relations, birth interval, frequency distribution of individual egg production levels and the concentration of reproduction among females in a cohort. Specific findings include: i) delay in reproductive peaks in a cohort after eclosion is due almost entirely to the variance in attainment of reproductive maturity among individuals; ii) low reproductive output of reproductively mature melon flies is due mostly to long birth intervals; iii) high egg production in both the medfly and the oriental fruit fly is due to their consistency of egg laying levels and frequency (short birth intervals). Discussion stresses the importance of viewing reproduction, not as a singular and discrete life history trait, but as consisting of subcomponents of daily parity, cumulative parity and birth interval.

Recovery time after experience of a given minimum temperature below torpor threshold is related to the value of that minimum, the length of time spent at that minimum, and the temperature prevailing during the recovery period above torpor threshold. A model can predict recovery time for flies experiencing a given temperature fluctuation if the length of time spent at the minimum is expressed as a proportion of LE50 at that minimum. The model has applications in defining the optimal protocol for chilling insects for use in the Sterile Insect Release Method. The model was confirmed by experiments showing that it is likely that flies will recover from non-lethal frosts before ant predators become active.

Respiration and growth of tomato fruit
The respiration rate and diameter expansion growth of young tomato fruit were measured simultaneously and related to changes in carbon import and plant water status. Respiration rate was directly proportional to the volume expansion rate of fruit growing on isolated plant tops at a positive water potential, whether the growth rate was changed by changing the fruit temperature or by manipulating the source:sink ratio of the plants. From the latter relationship, the maintenance respiration rate was estimated by extrapolation to zero growth and was found to be about 25% of the respiration rate of the average fruit at 21°C. Alternatively, when carbon import was prevented by heat-ringing the fruit peduncle, the respiration rate of the fruit declined to about 40% of the control rate and remained steady, while the expansion rate then declined steadily to >10% of the control rate. These results show that fruit expansion was not contributing significantly to fruit respiration. Indeed, large fluctuations in fruit expansion rate could also be induced by repeated darkening and illumination of potted plants without a corresponding change in fruit respiration. Most significantly, fruit expansion was considerably reduced when plants were allowed to wilt, hut there was no change in fruit respiration rate unless the fruit peduncle was subsequently heat-ringed. We conclude that a major part of the respiration of young tomato fruit was determined by the rate of carbon import, or associated processes, and that fruit expansion per se can occur with relatively low respiratory costs.

Sur  Banani 《Mycopathologia》1998,144(2):77-80
A mycological survey was carried out on the fruit surface of Indian jujube during its growth period (before harvest). A total of 32 microfungi belonging to 20 genera were isolated by surface washing technique. Artificial inoculations with the isolated myco-propagules were also performed in mature jujube fruits and most of them were able to cause rot of varying severity. However, Monodictys castaneae, Eupenicillium lapidosum, Paecilomyces fumosoroseus, Trichurus spiralis and Acremonium spp., although present on the fruit surface, were not able to cause rot, indicating lack of specific macerating enzymes necessary for postharvest pathogenesis. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Abstract

The involvement of cellulase (endo-b-l,4-glucanase, EC 3.2.1.4) in a number of different cell separation events which occur in higher plants has been well established. Besides their significance for the plant growth and differentiation, these events can be economically important since they also comprise softening of fleshy fruits and abscission of fruits, flowers and leaves. In higher plants cellulase is present in a number of different biochemical isoforms which are encoded by different genes. This finding is in accordance with the wide range of physiological events which require the intervention of cellulase activity, and whose peculiarities and amplitudes can be quite various.
